WHAT IT IS
----------

A free, modular, community-first tabletop RPG engine, built to help
designers make their own tabletop games rather than to be played as a
game itself.

Frontiers ships the structural layer every tabletop game needs — how a
check resolves, how a character is described, how damage and exhaustion
differ, how advancement moves — and leaves genre, setting, and tone to
whoever picks it up.

THE THREE RULESETS
------------------

Frontiers 1.0 ships the same engine in three dice forms. They are not
difficulty settings; they produce genuinely different feels.

    The d18 Ruleset
1d12 + 1d6, summed, with the d6 read again as the Gradient.
Curved, reliable, and the form the engine is tuned around.
Degree and direction correlate, so outcomes build momentum.

    The d20 Ruleset
One flat d20 with an independent d10 Gradient. Wider swing, on
the die most tables already own. The Gradient stands fully apart
from the verdict, so it adds texture rather than momentum.

    The d100 Ruleset
Percentile, roll-under, with the units die read as the Gradient.
        Granular, and exact about competence.

THE THREE STARTER SETS
----------------------

Complete, playable configurations of the engine, published as starting
points. Each settles the choices the core rules leave open, and each is
playable from Level 1 to 5. None of them is required.

Fantasy Starter Set ...... built on the d20 Ruleset
Sci-Fi Starter Set ....... built on the d100 Ruleset
Wasteland Starter Set .... built on the d18 Ruleset

Starter Sets are Licensed Material in full. They are free to use, adapt,
reskin, and build on.

WHAT ELSE SHIPS
---------------

    Design Documentation
Eight documents covering the resolution system, flow of play,
attributes and derivatives, skills, abilities, equipment, and
characters. Written to teach tabletop design, not only to
        describe Frontiers.

    Modules
Optional rules packages that bolt onto the core. Basic Combat
ships with 1.0. Community modules are welcome and are credited
as Licensors in their own right.

    Archive
Every version ever released stays online. Beta 2026-1 and
Beta 2026-2 remain available and readable.

WHO IT IS FOR
-------------

    Independent tabletop designers
    Third-party publishers
    Module and supplement creators
Groups experimenting with hybrid or cross-genre formats

THE COMMITMENTS
---------------

Free, permanently. It will never be sold, and ownership will never be
transferred.

Every version stays up. Work built against an older release stays usable
because that release is never removed or edited after its support ends.

Irrevocable. Under the ORC License, material already published cannot be
withdrawn, revoked, or have conditions added to it, for any existing or
future licensee.

Stable within a version. No mechanical term is renamed and no core
formula changes within a version line, so everything published as 1.x
shares 1.0's terms and rules.

CREATOR
-------

Frontiers was created by Jayke Paver (they/them) as a shared mechanical
foundation for collaborative tabletop design. It began as internal
infrastructure for their home game and became a public SRD.

Jayke is the owner and head writer of indie tabletop publisher Fragment
Press, and plans further releases both on and off the engine,
independently and through the company.

The ORC License was chosen to guarantee long-term compatibility and
responsible adaptation. Jayke intends to keep it that way for as long as
the engine exists, or as they put it, "at least until I die".
